THE EVOLUTION OF MAR

From an Innovative Concept to a Smart Platform for Environmental Monitoring

The evolution of the MAR – Multipurpose Amphibious Rover is the result of a long-term research and innovation programme that began in 2017 and has progressively transformed an original concept into an advanced amphibious robotic platform.

Over the years, MAR has evolved from an innovative prototype into a modular technology capable of integrating advanced sensors, intelligent data acquisition systems and mission-specific payloads for environmental monitoring, the Blue Economy and biodiversity protection.

Each research project has represented a key milestone, contributing new capabilities, increasing the platform’s Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and expanding its range of operational applications.

Phase I

The Original Idea (2017)

The MAR – Multipurpose Amphibious Rover originated in 2017 as an innovative concept developed by DEF-TECH, a spin-off created within SeTeL’s Research & Development department.

The initial objective was to design a robotic platform capable of moving seamlessly across land and water through an entirely new locomotion principle, overcoming the limitations of conventional ground and aquatic vehicles.

Transforming this vision into a working technology required a long-term research and development programme that combined DEF-TECH’s innovative approach with SeTeL’s engineering expertise, built over more than fifty years of experience in systems engineering.

This collaboration led to the design, prototyping and validation of a unique technological platform that is now protected by four patents, formally owned by DEF-TECH.

The first prototype successfully demonstrated the operating principle that would become the foundation of all subsequent developments.

Phase II

From Precision Agriculture to the First Operational Projects (2018–2021)

The first operational application of MAR was developed through AgriDroneVision, a project co-funded by the Lazio Region and focused on precision agriculture.

Within this project, MAR served as the Key Enabling Technology (KET), performing ground-based monitoring activities in cooperation with an aerial drone.

The integration of rover-acquired data, aerial imagery and distributed environmental sensors represented one of the first practical implementations of multi-platform data fusion, anticipating concepts that are now fundamental to smart environmental monitoring.

The LIFE WineGRover Project

The platform continued to evolve through the European LIFE WineGRover project, dedicated to precision viticulture.

WineGRover enabled extensive field validation of the rover in operational vineyards located in Italy and Spain while introducing innovative technologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of grape production.

During this phase, MAR achieved a higher level of technological maturity, improving its reliability, autonomy and integration with sensors specifically designed for precision agriculture.

A Key Technological Achievement

Both AgriDroneVision and WineGRover established one of the fundamental concepts that still defines the MAR platform today:

the integration of data collected from multiple observation systems — ground rover, aerial drone and distributed environmental sensors — to generate a more comprehensive understanding of the monitored environment.

This approach laid the foundations for today’s Data Fusion methodologies and intelligent environmental monitoring systems.

The ECOMAR project marked a major turning point in the evolution of the MAR platform.

The focus shifted from precision agriculture towards environmental monitoring, with particular attention to wetlands, transitional ecosystems and coastal environments.

The introduction of the fully amphibious configuration enabled MAR to operate directly in lagoons, wetlands and shallow coastal waters, opening entirely new application scenarios within the Blue Economy.
