MAR

Operational Scenarios

The MAR (Multipurpose Amphibious Rover) is an amphibious robotic platform designed to operate seamlessly across land, water and transitional environments without changing its configuration. Thanks to its modular architecture and the integration of mission-specific sensors, MAR provides a highly versatile solution for environmental monitoring, data acquisition and decision support.

From precision agriculture to the Blue Economy, from scientific research to emergency response, MAR can be rapidly configured for different missions while relying on the same robust robotic platform.

Select one of the application sectors below to discover how MAR supports a wide range of operational activities.

Precision Agriculture

Crop monitoring throughout the entire vegetative cycle...

MAR enables precision crop monitoring throughout the entire vegetative cycle, intervening during irrigation and the application of any pesticides and nutrients to optimize their use and operating only where actually needed. It can operate in viticulture, rice farming, and all row-crop cultivations.

Marshland Sensing

Environmental research and monitoring of wetland and river areas...

MAR can be used in environmental research and for monitoring wetland and river areas dedicated to ecosystem conservation. Its capability to move through complex environments makes it ideal for operations in marshes, coastal dunes, and generally in shallow waters, transitioning seamlessly from land to water.

Aquaculture / Fish Farming

Cage status monitoring and nighttime surveillance...

Monitoring: MAR can monitor the condition of floating cages and perform minor maintenance operations without the need for a support vessel. Compared to a human diver, the vehicle's operational availability is always guaranteed, reducing costs and risks for personnel.

Nighttime surveillance: MAR is equipped with a suite of infrared, NIR, and RGB sensors, and for high-end applications, it can be outfitted with multispectral sensors.

Mussel Cultivation

Interventions during seeding and monitoring in shallow waters...

In Italy, mussel farming is the primary aquaculture activity in terms of production volume, national distribution, and number of production sites. MAR can intervene both during the seeding phase (the wheels act as reservoirs) and the crop monitoring phase. It moves easily across both marshy terrain and shallow waters without damaging the crop.

Coastal Control

Ease of movement on sandy terrains and dunes...

MAR easily navigates sandy terrain to conduct patrols along beaches. It can maneuver across sand dunes with agility and enter shallow waters without changing configuration. Thanks to its energy reserve, it can operate as a static observer for long periods and move only when necessary.

Rescue and Transport

Transporting food and medicine in shallow waters and mud...

MAR easily navigates shallow waters and muddy terrain, and can transport food and first-aid supplies. This function is particularly useful because in such emergency conditions water depth, mud presence, or underwater obstacles cannot be predicted, resolving upfront whether to use land vehicles or watercraft.

A Platform Designed to Adapt

Unlike conventional robotic systems developed for a single purpose, the MAR amphibious rover has been designed as an open and reconfigurable platform capable of supporting a wide range of operational scenarios through the integration of dedicated sensors and payloads.

Its ability to move seamlessly between land and water allows a single robotic system to operate in complex environments where multiple platforms would normally be required, simplifying field operations and improving overall efficiency.

This flexibility makes MAR an ideal solution for both scientific research and professional applications, combining operational continuity, reliability and low environmental impact.

From Data Acquisition to Decision Support

The real value of MAR goes beyond its mobility.

Its greatest strength lies in the ability to acquire reliable environmental data and transform it into valuable information that supports technical, operational and strategic decision-making.

By integrating multiparameter sensors, GNSS positioning systems and advanced communication technologies, MAR collects real-time information that can be transmitted to control stations or cloud-based platforms for further processing and analysis.

This capability makes the platform a powerful tool for continuous environmental monitoring, territorial management, sustainable natural resource management and environmental early warning systems.

One Platform, Endless Configurations

One of the defining characteristics of the Multipurpose Amphibious Rover is its modular architecture.

The same robotic platform can be rapidly configured for different missions by integrating dedicated payloads, sensors and data acquisition systems.

This approach enables organisations to adapt the platform to evolving operational requirements without developing new robotic systems for each application, improving investment efficiency and accelerating technology transfer into new sectors.

Why Choose MAR

The platform has been designed to combine technological innovation, operational simplicity and environmental sustainability.

Its main advantages include:

  • Seamless transition between land and water without changing configuration

  • Modular and easily reconfigurable robotic platform

  • Integration of multiparameter environmental sensors

  • Automated collection of georeferenced data

  • Low impact on monitored ecosystems

  • High operational autonomy

  • Remote operation and assisted navigation

  • Adaptability to a wide variety of operational scenarios

These characteristics make MAR a reliable solution for both periodic inspections and long-term environmental monitoring missions.

Innovation Supporting the Blue Economy

MAR contributes to the development of more sustainable approaches to environmental monitoring and natural resource management.

By combining amphibious robotics, advanced sensing technologies and automated environmental data acquisition, the platform enables public authorities, research organisations and private companies to develop innovative services supporting the Blue Economy, biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation.

The platform continues to evolve through SeTeL’s ongoing research and development activities and the numerous innovation projects that have progressively expanded its capabilities and application fields.
